Micahel
Varisco: Shifting
With the intent of
engaging viewers in dialogue around the recent catastrophic gulf coast oil
spill, The Acadiana Center for the Arts presents Michel Varisco's artwork,
Shifting. This remarkable series of photographs focuses on the Louisiana
wetlands, swamps and barrier islands. The effect of the oil spill can be
clearly seen in Varisco's artwork, a compilation of photos incorporating salt
water intrusion, degradation of marshes from oil pipelines, former logging
channels, and the deepwater horizon oil spill. Toxic dispersants as well as
crude oil continues threatens the lands, waters and inhabitants at an
exhaustingly rapid rate.

Rajko Radovanovic: Last Line of Defense
The side gallery
will showcase an installation by the artist Rajko Radovanovic. The piece was
created in response to the ongoing oil spill crisis affecting the Gulf Coast.
Initially installed at the Good Children Gallery in New Orleans, the
installation is slated to travel to New York to be included in 'The Least We
Can Do', an exhibition of 15 artists from Southern Louisiana in response to the
oil spill. This upcoming exhibition, curated by Robin Atkinson, an emerging
curator from New Orleans, will focus on the cultural dependence on oil and the
way it has and continues to effect the lives of the residents of the Gulf
Coast.
Having worked as a visual arts curator, gallery director and film set
decorator, as well as an exhibiting artist, LoVullo brought with her a rich
background when she moved to Louisiana in 1990. While in Lafayette, Ms. LoVullo
was a director at the Lafayette Art Gallery, a board member of the Artist
Alliance, and continued to exhibit her work.

Kelly Guidry
Kelly Guidry's work
is a combination of both subtractive and constructive sculpture. He uses the
chainsaw and other power tools to cut and burn wood, and welding equipment to
bend and weld metal. His use of the tools is sometimes unorthodox and
techniques are constantly in a state of reinvention.

Gallery R (at The
Russo Group)
116 E. Congress St. /
769-1530
Gallery R Downtown is featuring design and artwork
of Michael Russo for August's 2nd Saturday Artwalk. Michael is the father of 4,
husband of 1 and Creative Director and Sr. Partner at The Russo Group. He has
been painting since the age of 9, and has been working as a creative in the
advertising industry for more than 10 years. His work, while illustrative in
nature, portrays an emotional presence that goes beyond the visual
representation of the image. Unlike the commercial work he creates daily, his
paintings are stylistic - utilizing a theme of unmixed primary colors applied
directly to the canvas. This showing highlights both Russo's artwork, as well
as professional work created at the agency.
The
show will be available for viewing through the remainder of the month during
regular business hours or by appointment.
