Downtown Alive! returns to Downtown Lafayette for its second Friday night concert of the Spring season. On Friday, March 15th, Downtown Alive! will host a tribute show to the “Crown Prince of Zydeco,” Alton Rubin, aka Rockin’ Dopsie. Dopsie was a critically acclaimed Zydeco musician who played the accordion left-handed and upside down and contributed to Paul Simon’s Graceland album on the song “That Was Your Mother.” Dopsie Sr. was one of the first musicians to play the stage at Downtown Alive! and the tribute show will feature music by Dopsie’s sons: Dwayne, Tiger, Anthony, and David (who performs as Rockin’ Dopsie Jr.).
“Rockin’ Dopsie Sr. is part of the ABCs of zydeco, those first Creole families that started the music. Dopsie was zydeco when zydeco wasn’t cool,” said Herman Fuselier, Director of St. Landry Parish Tourism and host of Zydeco Stomp on KRVS, “yet he helped to put the music on a worldwide stage.”
“It’s inspiring to see his sons Dwayne, Anthony, David and Tiger follow in his footsteps and have international careers, just like their father,” said Fuselier. “You might find them playing on ‘Wheel of Fortune’ one week, performing in front of 80,000 in Brazil the next. But they never forget their roots in Lafayette. Thanks to Downtown Alive! for recognizing this family’s rich legacy.”
Concertgoers can get up close and personal with the Dopsie legacy as Rubin’s sons wow the crowd at Parc Sans Souci with a high intensity Zydeco show like no other. The party starts at 5:00 PM with the DTA! Happiest Hour, and the band takes the stage at 6:00 PM.
Downtown Alive! concertgoers will have many reasons to enjoy their night Downtown aside from the excellent musical offerings, beginning with the DTA! Happiest Hour at 5:00 PM.
