Household Hazardous Waste Day is June 16!
Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG) has rescheduled its semi-annual Household Hazardous Waste Day (HHWD) for Saturday, June 16 from 8 a.m. until noon at Cajun Field. Residents in the City of Lafayette and unincorporated areas of the parish are encouraged to bring their unwanted household chemicals and electronics to be recycled or properly disposed.
In addition to the traditional chemicals for disposal such as paint, poison, chemical cleaners, gasoline and mercury, this edition of the popular disposal day will include an electronic waste disposal option, sponsored by CGI. Residents can bring old computers, printers and other digital electronics. Through a partnership with Capital Area Corporate Recycling Council (CACRC), the collected e-waste is refurbished and recycled, providing low income families and individuals affordable access to technology. More than 48,800 pounds of electronic waste has been repurposed, reducing unnecessary waste in the landfill, since LCG and CGI began partnering for e-waste collection in 2016.
Residents can also turn in unwanted latex paint on June 16, which will be re-blended and repackaged for use by Lafayette Habitat for Humanity. The paint re-blending project not only provides a needed product to a worthy cause, it also significantly reduces waste and saves on disposal costs. Since inception of the paint re-blending initiative, 2,830 gallons of usable latex paint has been salvaged and repurposed, saving LCG and tax payers thousands of dollars in disposal costs, while also preserving the landfill.
HHWD is offered at no additional cost to those living within the City of Lafayette or unincorporated areas of the parish. Residents are asked to take advantage of this event in order to properly dispose of hazardous household materials. Attendees should enter the Cajun Field parking lot at Gate 3 from Congress. The event is scheduled from 8 a.m. until noon.
